You may think the last night of SxSW would be spent packing all of the clothes (and more) back into the few small bags you brought, or trying to remember which faces go with the hundreds of business cards you have in your pocket. Normally this may have been a last night, but not at SxSW. On the last night of my SxSW journey (end of day 9 to be exact) I found myself sitting in the directors lounge of the Paramount theater with Lemmy Kilmister and Phil Campbell of Motorhead on the right of me and Triple H (WWE wrestler) on the left of me. Mixed somewhere in the room were the two directors/producers, Greg Olliver and Wes Orshoski, of Lemmy the Movie. By the time I realized it was actually me in the room, it was time to move downstairs to watch the premier, and film a great Q&A session with Olliver, Orshoski and Lemmy himself (Q&A posted on YouTube link). This was my last night at SxSW, and although it may sound strange, it made perfect sense to cap off the week this way.

South by Southwest was better than ever expected this year. Being my second year, I had only hoped this one would be better than the last, but what I found when I got there was a sense of belonging. It’s like the entire conference knew I was back and after only a year, made me feel like a seasoned veteran. Every goal I set out to accomplish, just fell into my lap at some point during the week (music licensing, film production, and improvement on editing skills). PepsiCo had a strong presence in several areas at SxSW this year, and being part of the group representing PepsiCo meant something even more. Pete Cashmore of Mashable (one the leaders in the social media world) even stood a little taller when talking about ” the great things PepsiCo is doing”. I got to see first hand how much of an impact the Pepsi Refresh Project is making not only on people but also across several industries, film, music and the social interaction, represented at SxSW. People were happy to talk about it on all levels, and were saying great things about what PepsiCo (and its products) is accomplishing. I left SxSW with a feeling of achievement on many levels. The first was personal, I came back with a lot more skills and a lot more knowledge than I ever imagined. More important than this though, I came back knowing that it’s important for PepsiCo to be there. I know why we are dedicating so much to innovative thinking in places like SxSW, and this year I actually saw the impact that PepsiCo is making as a result. PepsiCo needs to be there and I am so honored to be a part of the reason we were. I can’t wait till next year. See you in 2011, SxSW…

Copyright is busted, according to Joel Johnson (Gizmodo) of the Music Licensing for Emerging Media panel at SxSW. This was the overall theme of the panel session. According to the panel the copyright laws have not been modified by the music industry to make up for the change in broadcast media. With the overwhelming emergence of viral videos and apps that require music, it proves to be difficult for both the artist and the filmmaker/developer to acquire licensing. The good news is awareness of the issue is out there, and there are several groups working with the filmmakers to help them with the legalities of licensing in media. As the shift in media is now more about generating attention and not so much about revenue, it seems there are many working to shift the copyright laws to reflect the change.

Panelists included:Annie Lin (The Rights Workshop), Robin Raj (Citizen Group), Adam Blumenthal (Curious Sense) Joel Johnson (Gizmodo) and Randy Sheter (Sony).

The panel, Directing the Dead: Genre Directors Spill Their Guts, was made up of five directors with great success in the film genre of horror. All of the directors talked very candidly about making their films, and how they approach new ones. While each director had a different way of approaching their films, they all shared one thing in common…a passion for blood and guts. Panelist included Ti West, Ruben Fleischer, Matt Reeves, Neil Marshall and Austin resident Robert Rodriguez. The directors also gave advise to the audience, to make the movies you want to make, and don’t let other factors influence your vision (even if that means changing the saturation of the blood color to get past the ratings board). With horror films as Cloverfield, The Descent, Zombieland and Grind House, these guys know how to scare you and yet were very inspiring to hear. While I am pretty sure the rating for the panel would be “R” (due to language, graphic description and gory conversation), its panels like this that make SxSW a huge success in film.

After the premier of the movie Kick-Asson Friday night, I headed down to the after party at Buffalo Billiards. Wandering around and putting on a wig and looking like the character Red Mist (you have to see the movie), I headed in the VIP and waited for something else unbelievable to happen. With my luck still running strong, wouldn’t you know it, there is Chris Mintz-Plasse (Red Mist in Kick-Ass and also McLovin from Superbad) walking my way (truthfully I walked up to him, but who needs details). Suddenly its ten minutes later, and I’m walking away from a great conversation with Mitz-Plasse…Wait wait, what just happened? I just had a conversation with McLovin. Actually Chris Mintz-Plasse is a really nice guy. We discussed his movies, Austin and other random topics that came up out of nowhere. All in all it was a great cap to a great time at the Kick-Ass premier. So what’s next? More to come…

So the last minute decision to drive (opposed to walking) over the Paramount Theater for the premier of the movie Kick-Ass, proved to be a great one. Fortunately (and with a little SxSW luck) I arrived with the cast and was able to walk in with the director Matthew Vaughn and stars of the film Chris Mintz-Plasse (McLovin from Superbad) and Aaron Johnson. Next thing I know, I was escorted into the theater and seated in the front row with several photographers and journalists. Lights down and a stern warning about no video during the movie and the show began. Now normally, this post would be about how great the movie Kick Ass was (and it really was a good movie), but what really kicked about being there was the front row Q&A session with the director, cast, writers and producers of the film. Still trying to process how I got in, I now realized I have front row access to film the entire session (YouTube link to follow). While Vaughn just got off a plane from London before the premier started, both Chris Mintz-Plasse and Aaron Johnson were fantastic. Yes McLovin is just as fun, quirky and engaging as in all his films (read more about McLovin in my Kick Ass after party post). Actually the writers and producers were great as well. SxSW Film organizers mentioned this being the biggest opening premier of SxSW to date. This was great way to kick of the 2010 year with a Kick Ass SxSW premier.
