Copyright is Busted – Generating Attention not Revenue

Copyright is busted, according to Joel Johnson (Gizmodo) of the Music Licensing for Emerging Media panel at SxSW.  This was the overall theme of the panel session.  According to the panel the copyright laws have not been modified by the music industry to make up for the change in broadcast media.  With the overwhelming emergence of viral videos and apps that require music, it proves to be difficult for both the artist and the filmmaker/developer to acquire licensing.  The good news is awareness of the issue is out there, and there are several groups working with the filmmakers to help them with the legalities of licensing in media. As the shift in media is now more about generating attention and not so much about revenue, it seems there are many working to shift the copyright laws to reflect the change.

Panelists included:Annie Lin (The Rights Workshop), Robin Raj (Citizen Group), Adam Blumenthal (Curious Sense) Joel Johnson (Gizmodo) and Randy Sheter (Sony).
